Resurrection People 5

May Day(honoring Flora, Roman goddess of flowers); Beltane (Druid fire festival and coven initiations); Walpurgis Day (celebrating the demons); International Workers’ Day (anarchists, socialists, progressives, communists); National Law Day (established by President Eisenhower in 1958 by Proclamation and established in law in 1961 at Title 36, Section 11 to celebrate the rule of law).

Choose your holiday and the gods associated with it, I guess. I know I grew up celebrating May Day, with the pole and all that goes with it. Certainly went along with a much simpler time for children, on the whole. Growing up in rural western Kansas, we spent all summer outside, playing, gardening, exploring, taking care of cattle and horses. And, evidently, unconsciously celebrating the summer solstice and the flower goddess!

Our children no longer live in simple times, do they?

I do not blame the Supreme Court decision in Engels v. Vitale in 1962 (banning prayer in public schools) for the statistics below, but … following the “idyllic” 50s we can easily follow the decline in this nation of public morals (and morale) and the damage that has caused. Here are some things that have happened since 1962.

A. Young People

  • For 15 years before 1963 pregnancies in girls ages 15 through 19 years had been no more than 15 per thousand.  After 1963 pregnancies increased 187% in the next 15 years.
  • For younger girls, ages 10 to 14 years, pregnancies since 1963 are up 553%.
  • Before 1963 sexually transmitted diseases among students were 400 per 100,000. Since 1963, they were up 226% in the next 12 years.

B. The Family

  • Before 1963 divorce rates had been declining for 15 years. After 1963 divorces increased 300% each year for the next 15 years
  • Since 1963 unmarried people living together is up 353%
  • Since 1963 single parent families are up 140%
  • Since 1963 single parent families with children are up 160%

C. Education

  • The educational standard of measure has been the SAT scores. SAT scores had been steady for many years before 1963. From 1963 they rapidly declined for 18 consecutive years, even though the same test has been used since 1941
  • In 1974-75 the rate of decline of the SAT scores decreased, even though they continued to decline. That was when there was an explosion of private religious schools. There were only 1000 Christian schools in 1965. Between 1974 to 1984 they increased to 32,000
  • That could have an impact if the private schools had higher SAT scores. In checking with the SAT Board it was found that indeed the SAT scores for private schools were nearly 100 points higher than public schools
    • In fact the scores were at the point where the public schools had been before their decline started in 1963 when prayer and Bible reading/ instruction was removed from the schools
    • The scores in the public schools were still declining
    • Of the nation's top academic scholars, three times as many come from private religious schools, which operate on one-third the funds as do the public schools

Criminal arrest of teens is up 150% according to the US Bureau of Census; teen suicides in ages 15-19 years up 450% according to the National Center of Health Services; illegal drug activity is up 6000% according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse; child abuse cases up 2300% according to the US Department of Health and Human Services; divorce up 350% according to the US Department of Commerce, and SAT scores fell 10% even though the SAT questions have been revamped to be easier to answer.

Violent crime has risen 350%, national morality figures have plummeted, and teen pregnancy escalated dramatically after prayer and the Bible were removed from the schools.

Much has happened since 1962, some of it very good, but the need for us to pray for our children, especially those in public schools, has increased exponentially.

Misty asked for prayer for teachers and the education industry in Oklahoma. She’s right – they need our prayers, because of budget cuts, new standards, etc.

And our children need prayer even more powerfully. The statistics above show just part of the dangers they face. Ask a young Christian going to a secular university how often Christianity or morality is undercut in the classroom. Ask many of our children anything about the knowledge of civics and the foundations of our country, rights, responsibilities, duties, etc.

Pray for our children, teachers, and the education industry.  Fr. Tere
