Pentecost – a people to the world. For the Lord is good…

Psalm 100 5Psalm 100 – A Psalm for giving thanks. We remember, I pray –

God is good – all the time.                        All the time – God is good.

Why? Because it is his nature.                       He can be nothing else.

Paul tells us that “perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die” – but it’s a big “perhaps” and, where are we to find a “good” person. Remember that Jesus says, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.” Mark 10:8; Luke 18:19.

I don’t know about you, but I often hear that so-and-so is/was a “good” person. That presumably means something in the world, if only because we hear it so much. It usually means that the person either gives lots of money for something that the world supports, or he/she gives up a wonderful career and goes to care for the poor or the sick or the baboons whatever. Occasionally we hear about the “good” daughter who stays home and cares for a parent. Are the ones who don’t stay home “bad” daughters/sons?

We want the “good,” don’t we? But what is the good? Is it something that makes us happy? Something that “feels” good? something that helps another person? Just what is it?

Jesus says that only the Father is good – God alone. That might not make us feel too good, and it will be antithetical to the culture, the world, and many friends and colleagues. Remember, they see everything upside down from the Fall – we should be now seeing right-side-up from the Redemption. For “while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly” – for us, for you and me personally. Because he is good, God sent Jesus at the perfect time to die that our sins might be forgiven. Only God could redeem us and take away the sin of the world. Only God could turn right-side-up what Adam/Eve had turned upside down. And, because he is good, God did not leave his creation as we had made it – wretched, filthy, radically sinful, un-“good.” Where we live is the absolute opposite of who and what is God, no matter how much we wish it were different, no matter how much the world says it is different.

We can only glimpse this goodness of God because “we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Psalm 100 2The goodness of God is shown, Paul says, in our peace, in our access by faith into God’s grace, in our hope of the glory of God, even in our sufferings, which produces endurance, then character, then hope which does not put us to shame. Why? because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:1-11

Because God is good, because goodness is his very nature, we serve him with gladness, we come into his presence with singing, thanksgiving, praise. This God who created the universe as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who created us, redeemed us, and keeps us alive in his love, invites us into his presence with singing!  Not with self-flagellation, as we deserve; not with condemnation, or fear, or prostration, or obsequiousness, or fawning, or any other of the 198 synonyms for groveling, as we deserve, but with gladness and singing.

Truly: God is good – all the time.              All the time – God is good.

Why? Because it is his nature.                       He can be nothing else.

Romans 5 1-3
